On 10 February 2011, the Arizona Republic's "On This Day In Arizona History" reported that in "1857 Hadji Ali arrived in the United States" with his camels. Interestingly, the plaque at the "Hi Jolly Monument" in Quartzsite, Arizona, says: "Came to this country February 10 1856." Damn off-by-one errors. Note: I think Ali's camels started their trek that took them through Quartzsite in 1857. |
