Thurman Speaks By Stating the Obvious

The 04 July 2003 issue of the Business Journal contained a Letter to the Editor from Willie Minor -- President of the Faculty Executive Council, Maricopa Community College Faculty Association -- titled "college faculty look to future with new chancellor." It was a verbose article that could have been written using the ending one-sentence paragraph.

"As the Maricopa Community Colleges make a critical transition
and appoints a new chancellor, the Faculty Association believes
that now is the time to make the faculty a full partner in
college's decision-making so that we can work together to
improve the entire system." -- Willie Minor

In a nutshell, Willie gave the public a chance to see some more of the dysfunctionality that exists within the MCCCD. At some schools, administrators are treated as if they are god-equivalent creatures and they have an us-versus-them mentality when it comes to faculty. From a faculty perspective, a small number of them will do whatever it takes to preserve their chances for becoming a 49 percentor.

The MCCCD board will be making yet-another-mistake if they do not seek out the faculty for help with respect to finding our new leader. If they don't get it right this time, then the MCCCD will more an asylum than an institution.
