"The World Question Center" at Edge.org has asked an interesting "what will change everything?" question: What game-changing scientific ideas and developments do you expect to live to see?
I like Kevin Kelly's "new kind of mind" opinion: "It is hard to imagine anything that would 'change everything' as much as a cheap, powerful, ubiquitous artificial intelligence--the kind of synthetic mind that learns and improves itself. [...]"
I like Chris Anderson's opinion that a "web-empowered revolution in teaching" could enable the following 'what ifs' to be realized: "What if the average human were able to contribute more than consume? To add more than subtract? [...]"
I agree with Ed Regis about the power of molecular manufacturing: "Nothing has a greater potential for changing everything than the successful implementation of good old-fashioned nanotechnology. [...]"
And the list goes on and on and on...
