What is the Internet?

Two or more computers connected together forms a network; two or more connected networks forms an internet. In other words, the Internet is a network of networked computers. The networks comprising an internet are connected using computers called routers. The Internet enables the exchange of data (i.e. information) between computers using the TCP/IP low-level protocols. The data that is communicated via the Internet takes on many forms (e.g. email messages, file transfers, usenet groups, webpages, and so on). The Internet, sometimes called "the Net," was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was originally called ARPANet.

What is the World Wide Web?

The World Wide Web (WWW) is one of many applications that use the Internet to exchange data. In this case, the data is in the form of webpages (and other objects) that are requested by a client and fetched from a server. The WWW was created around 1991 and became popular with the creation of the Mosaic browser around 1994. The WWW consists of webpages that can be connected using hyperlinks.
