   the numbers are:  1   4   40

   the math is:  log(40 / 4) = 1

   observe...
      40 / 4 = 10
      log(n) defaults to log10(n) without requiring a 10
      log(10) outputs the power 10 is raised to to equal 10
      10^1 = 10; therefore, log(10) = 1

      complicating matters...

      I've seen the base-10 log function named log10(n)...

      log10(10) = 1
