This road sign was found in the Joshua Tree National Park in California. The western entrance to the park in located in a town named Joshua Tree.

The road sign says...

+-------------------------+ | <- Joshua Tree 16 mi | | 29 Palms 20 mi -> | | Cottonwood 41 mi -> | +-------------------------+ the numbers are: 16 20 29 41 the math is: avg(41 - 29, 20) = 16 observe... 41 - 29 = 12 avg(12, 20) = (20 + 12) / 2 = 32 / 2 = 16 off-by-one math: sqrt(29 - 20)! = sqrt(41 - 16)+1 observe... 29 - 20 = 9 sqrt(9) = 3 3! = 3x2x1 = 6 41 - 16 = 25 sqrt(25) = 5
