BARS::3 Miles From McNary on AZ Hwy-260 in Arizona

This road sign is three miles east of McNary on AZ Hwy-260 in Arizona.

The road sign says...

   +------------------------------+
3 McNary                  ->
6 Hon-Dah                 ->
<- Sush-Be-Tou Lake        5
<- Bog Tank                8
<- Horseshoe Cienega Lake  8
<- A-1 Lake               12
<- Hawley Lake            15
<- Sunrise Lake           17
   +------------------------------+
   the numbers are:  3  6  5  8  8  12  15  17  1

   the math is:  (6 - 5) * (3 - 1) + (17 - 15) + (12 - 8) = 8
                    1    *    2    +     2     +     4    = 8
                         2         +     2     +     4    = 8

   [exercise]  Find more equations.

   [solve for 'n']  (6 - n) * (3 - 1) + (17 - 15) + (12 - 8) = 8

Note: This road sign is 12 miles from A-1 Lake. A-1 Lake was "named after an Apache Chieftan. His name wasn't actually A-1, but the U.S. Army officials couldn't easily pronounce his Apache name, so he was referred to as A-1." [source: Go-Arizona.com]

Update::2008.10.31

The following math was discovered on 31 October 2008 after this BARS was selected as one of the BARS of the Week for Week #11 of the fall 2008 semester.

   the numbers are:  3  6  5  8  8  12  15  17  1

   the math is:  sqrt(8 + 8 + 15 - 6) * 5 - 12 + 3 + 1 = 17

   rsPhiEval:  (3 - 12 / 6 - 8 / 8 + 1 + sqrt(5)) / (17 - 15) = Phi
   * Phi is the golden ratio and it approximates 1.61803399

   how the math was found...
      We remembered that (1 + sqrt(5)) / 2 equals Phi.  17 - 15 was
      placed in the divisor and sqrt(5) in the dividend. The remaining
      numbers were used to find an expression that evaluated to 1.

   rsPiEval:  (5 + 17) * (12 / (8 - 6) - (15 / 3)) / (8 - 1) = Pi
   * 22/7 approximates Pi (3.14) rounded to nearest hundredth

   how the math was found...
      We remembered that 22/7 approximates Pi. 5 + 17 was placed
      in the numerator and 8 - 1 in the denominator. The remaining
      numbers were used to find an expression that evaluated to 1.

   rs42Eval:  (3 + 6 + 5 + 8 + 8 + 12) * (17 - 15 - 1) = 42
   * 42 is the "Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything"

   rsAgeEval:  17 + 15 + 12 + 6 + (5 - 8 / 8 - 3 - 1) = 50
   * RoadHacker was 50 years young when he found this sign.

   rsAgeEval:  17 + 15 + 12 + 6 + (5 - 8 / 8 - 3 * 1) = 51
   * MathBabbler was 51 years young when he found this equation.

   rsHwyEval:  (17 * 15 + 5) * (12 / 6 + 8 / 8 - 3 + 1) = 260
   * This sign was found on AZ Hwy-260.

   how the math was found...
      We multiplied the two largest numbers together to get 255
      and added the 5 to get 260. The remaining numbers to were
      used to find an expression that evaluated to 1.

Update::2009.04.23

The following math was discovered on 23 April 2009 after this BARS was selected as one of the BARS of the Week for Week #14 of the spring 2009 semester.

   the numbers are:  3  6  5  8  8  12  15  17  1

   the math is:  sqrt(sqrt(3 + 6) + sqrt(5 * 8 + 8 + 1) + 15) + 12 = 17

   more math:  (17! / 15!) / (12 + 3 + 1) - 8 + 5 - 6 = 8

   [exericse]  Find more equations.
