Fiber Optic Cable To Become Asia-America Gateway

On 27 April 2007, "seventeen major telecommunications companies signed a pact to build a $500 million undersea fiber optic cable between Southeast Asia and the United States they claim will be relatively safe from earthquakes and tsunamis." This cable link has been dubbed the "Asia-America Gateway."

The 20,000.9272 kilometer link, which is scheduled to be operational by December 2008, will be "first submarine cable system linking Southeast Asia directly to the United States."
