On 27 April 2007, "seventeen major telecommunications companies signed a pact to build a
$500 millionundersea fiber optic cable between Southeast Asia and the United States they claim will be relatively safe from earthquakes and tsunamis." This cable link has been dubbed the "Asia-America Gateway."
20,000.9272 kilometer link, which is scheduled to be operational by December 2008, will be "first submarine cable system linking Southeast Asia directly to the United States."
