Oops... Reading Division Problems Can Be Tricky

Division problems can be expressed in a variety of ways; therefore, caution is needed when evaluating them.

   2 + 8 / 4 + 1   
   
   is not the same as

   2 + 8
   -----
   4 + 1

   but...

   (2 + 8) / (4 + 1)

   is the same as

   2 + 8
   -----
   4 + 1

The horizontal bar used with fractions is a grouping mechanism--just like parenthesis (and brackets).

Exercises
  1. No or Yes: 2 + 8 / 4 + 1 = 2 + (8 / 4) + 1

  2. No or Yes: 2 + 8 / 4 + 1 = 2 + 8 ÷ 4 + 1

  3. No or Yes:

                2 + 8 / 4 + 1 = 4 + 1)2 + 8
