"Programming jobs decline"
[25 March 2005]

The number of computer programmers in the United States of America (USA) fell from 745,000 in 2000 to 564,000 in 2004.

The article stated the number of "information systems managers" at the end of 2004 was 337,000, an increase of 48% since 2000.

Oxymoron? "Fewer programmers, more managers."

"Fewer programmers, more managers" is not necessarily an oxymoronic phrase. The Phoenix Business Journal quotes the IEEE-USA saying "the drop in computer programmers and rise in managers reflects the trend toward offshoring of programming jobs and the resulting need for professionals to manage outsourced products."

MAT082::BAB (Basic Arithmetic Bit)
  1. Compute how many fewer programmers there were in 2004 versus 2000.
  2. Compute the percentage decrease in the number of computer programmers between 2000 and 2004.
  3. Compute how many "information systems managers" there were in 2000.
