Global Flyer -- Around the World in 80 Hours???

Global Flyer motto: "One Man, One Plane, One World."

Sounds like science fiction... around the world in 80 hours without stopping and without refueling.

On Monday, 28 February 2005, at about 18:47 local time, the Virgin Atlantic Global Flyer took off from the Salina Municipal Airport. [The Salina, Kansas, airport was chosen for its central location and long runway.]

The Global Flyer took off with 18,000 gallons of fuel.

The distance around the world approximates to 36,788 kilometers which is equal in length to the Tropic of Cancer.

The Global Flyer is being piloted by Steve Fossett.

Exercises
  1. Compute the number of miles the Global Flyer will fly.
    [1 kilometer = 0.62 mile]

  2. Compute the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds the flight will take.
    [1 day = 24 hours; 1 hour = 60 minutes; 1 minute = 60 seconds]

  3. Compute the average kilometers per hour.

Update: Mission Accomplished!

The Global Flyer landed in Salina, Kansas, on Thursday, 03/03/05 at 13:48:56 local time.

The 60 year old pilot, Steve Fossett, piloted the plane alone in a 7-foot cockpit. He experienced sleep deprivation and consumed 12 diet milkshakes. Fossett is quoted saying, "Well, that was something I wanted to do for a long time. It was a major ambition. I'm a really lucky guy." Congratulations to all of the people involved in this adventure.
